In this interview for the UK Column, I speak with environmental scientist Peter Taylor about his two books, as well as many other topics, including germ versus terrain theory.
Oxford-educated with two degrees, Taylor left academia in 1978 to work as an independent advisor, consultant, activist, and scientific expert on environmental issues. A member of the Environmental Studies Institute (California), founding member of Cambrian Wildwood, the Wildland Research Institute (Leeds University), and the Institute for Life-based Architecture (Germany), he combines peer-reviewed science with first-hand field research. From 1976 to 1992, his Oxford-based Political Ecology Research Group tackled ocean and atmospheric pollution, nuclear waste dumping, acid rain, and the ‘plutonium economy’, helping transform policies through Cleaner Production Strategies. His policy work, especially on the precautionary principle in pollution control, has been influential, leading to advisory roles with Greenpeace International, the UN International Maritime Organisation, and the UK Government.
In 2009, Taylor wrote the book Chill, A Reassessment of Global Warming Theory: Does Climate Change Mean the World is Cooling, and If So What Should We Do About It?, which upset a few of his peers.
Alongside his scientific and political career, Taylor trained in the Himalayan yogic tradition under Herakhan Baba and worked with Western shamans, seeking to balance analytical thinking with deeper, more intuitive perspectives beyond the materialism of modern science. This integration of rigorous environmental science with spiritual insight has influenced his current book, Climate, Covid and Conspiracy.
